Annual Convocation - 2017
Date: March 26, 2017

The Annual Convocation Ceremony of GNIMS Business School was held on 26th March’17 at the Multipurpose Hall. The Chief Guest of the ceremony was Mr.T.R.Doongaji,Former Managing Director,Tata Services.

The batches that graduated included MMS, PGDM, PGDM Media Management,MFM,MMM,MHRDM,E-MBA 8th batch & E-MBA 9th Batch which included 300 plus students receiving the convocation certificates.

The ceremony began with a grand procession which included the Chief Guest Mr.T.R Doongaji, Former Managing Director Tata Services. Dr.Satvinder Singh Madhok,Executive Director J.P.Morgan, Dr.Bigyan Verma, Director GNIMS,Mr.Padmanabham,Registrar GNIMS, Dr.Vidya Hattangadi,Head E-MBA,GNIMS, entire faculty and academic toppers starting from GNIMS campus to the venue. The dignitaries lit the ceremonial lamp, followed by the prayer song and the convocation ceremony officially began. Dr.Bigyan Verma presented the Director’s Report where he touched upon the outstanding progress in placement and academic areas. Dr. Bigyan Verma went on to mention the numerous achievements of the GNIMS faculties, which include publications, research and awards. He then recounted the triumphs of GNIMS students that participated in events across India. GNIMS Award for Professional Excellence 2017 was given to Dr.Satvinder Singh Madhok, Executive Director J.P.Morgan by the Chief Guest Mr.T.R.Doongaji, Therafter certificates of academic excellence being given to specialization toppers in every course followed by the overall course topper.

This year, ‘Student of the Year’ was given in full time, part time and E-MBA programs. The convocation certificates were given to the convocation address by the Chief Guest, Mr.T.R.Doongaji, who shared three key lessons namely“Business has a larger purpose”, “Ethics is paramount” and “Learn to pause”. The graduates celebrated the occasion by tossing their graduation hats and formally concluding the evening! The ceremony was indeed a memorable event!

International Research Conference
Date: February 6, 2016

GNIMS Business School successfully conducted its First International Research Conference on the Theme “Library: A Temple of Learning and Knowledge House”, on February 6, 2016.

The Inaugural address was delivered by Dr. Ajit Singh, Former Director General, GNIMS and the welcome address was delivered by Dr. Bigyan Verma, Director, GNIMS. Sardar Surinderpal Singh Bright, LMC Member, GNIMS graced the Inaugural Function. Dr. Kiran Mangaonkar, Principal, G. N. Khalsa College shared his views about the conference. Highlights of the conference were given by Ms. Kuljeet G. Kahlon, Library Manager, GNIMS.

Keynote address was delivered by Dr. Akhtar Parvez, Librarian, Learning Resource Center, IIM, Indore and the Valedictory address was delivered by Dr. A. Ganesan, Director Library, Prist University, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.


Dr. Jyotinder Kaur Chaddah gave the vote of thanks to all the dignitaries as well as the participants who had come from all over the country, including two neighboring countries. Ms. Chaturangaa Weerasekera from Colombo, Srilanka presented her research paper during the conference.

There were three technical sessions with different themes like Social Media and Cloud Computing; E-Resources and New Innovations and Emerging Technologies.


Total Research Papers received were 85. 68 Research Papers were published in the International Research Conference Proceedings with ISBN No. 978-93-83-003-02-0 which was released by the dignitaries.

Management Libraries Network (MANLIBNET) also presented a memento and Certificate to GNIMS for Certificate of Excellence for successfully organizing a series of five National Research Conferences on the Theme “Library: A Temple of Learning and Knowledge House.” Best paper was also sponsored by MANLIBNET and awarded to Ms. Vinita Jain, Librarian, M.D. College, Mumbai with a cash prize of Rs.10,000/-, a Memento and a Certificate.


Participant’s felt that the conference was very informative and they gained knowledge about the new technological advancement in the field of Library Science.

The dignitaries and the participants appreciated the efforts taken by the Library Team to successfully organize this International Conference.

VIRSA 2016: “Junoon – The Passion of Superhero”
Date: 27th & 28th February, 2016


Virsa meaning Heritage is our endeavor to preserve the rich cultural and Social Heritage of the Country. Annual Management and Cultural Festival “Virsa 2016 was held on 27th and 28th February 2016. The theme of the event this year was “Junoon - The Passion of Superhero”. The theme aims to glorify the vehement bravery, earnest devotion of superheroes from different arenas and their contribution for the betterment of the nation. GNIMS paid special tribute to the crusaders of the country that is Army, Navy and Air force Officers, also a tribute in recognition of the superheroes that we come across in our daily live. This theme not only celebrate their victory but also inculcate civic virtue amongst all.

Mr. Anami Narayan Roy (Former Director-General of Police, Maharashtra and Former Police Commissioner of Mumbai, currently Non-Executive Independent Director of HDFC Bank Ltd,) inaugurated the event. On the first day, Inter-collegiate management events like Business Plans, Still Photography, Mock Stock, Persuade to Win, An-dekha Funda, Open Forum, Shout Box and Amazing Race (Financial Treasure Hunt), Defuse the Bomb and also sports events were held, followed by DJ Wars in the evening. The Inter and Intra-cultural events took place on the Second day, along with the Mr. and Mrs. GNIMS 2016 contest.

Children form Society for Human and Environmental Development (SHED), an NGO, also performed at the fest. The chief Guest for the cultural events was Ms. Kiran Bawa (Partner & MD – Iosis Medi Spa) and Mr. Pearl V. Puri, (TV Actor from Phir Bhi Na Maane, Badtameez Dil and Meri Saau Ma) was the Guest of Honor. The evening concluded with Bhangra performance choreographed by Mr. Nitin Duggal.

PARIVARTAN II – “Decoding Leadership in a VUCA World”

A one day Knowledge Symposium named PARIVARTAN II – “Decoding Leadership in a VUCA World” was organized by the Career Development Cell – GNIMS on 4th March 2016 featuring 3 Speakers viz. CHRO & Heads from various domains. This was a step forward by the institute in bridging the gap between the Industry and Academia.

The Symposium saw a host of esteemed speakers for the Individual Speaker Sessions by eminent industry leaders.

The 1st speaker - Mr. Subramanian Suryanarayanan - Chief Human Resource Officer - Tata AIG General Insurance Company Ltd., whose address was primarily based on the traits of great leadership and their perseverance to complete the task in the pursuit of excellence.

Valuable contribution & invigorating conversations ensued from the speaker sessions of: Ms. Mousumi Roy - Vice President & Head - Talent, Learning & Organizational Development - Bharati AXA Life Insurance Company Ltd., who shared her success and experience story with the students and Mr. Suresh A Shan - Head Business Information Technology Solutions - Mahindra & Mahindra, who made a presentation on the topic and made the session extremely interactive. The speakers were not only gifted raconteurs but also had the expertise of connecting very well with the GNIMS students.

The speakers’ insights into the VUCA World and little take away for students in the form of building on their strengths and skill sets resonated very well in the audience.


Alumni Meet 2012

The air was nostalgic, the music in the background pleasant and the ambience absolutely a toast to the party. We had a successful Alumni Reunion held on 6th October 2012 at Mumbai Cricket Association, Bandra Kurla Complex. We are planning to host two events for alumni in a year. The second has been planned in the month of April 2013.

It was a wonderful occasion to interact with and share experiences with the alumni who graduated from the institute about eight to ten years back.

The meeting was inaugurated by Mr. Vivek Vichare, General Manager – LG International Corp. Dr. Ajit Singh, Director General – GNIMS, welcomed the Alumni and also emphasized the need for a strong alumni association. An opportunity was also given to the alumni to share their experiences. All the participants opined that the Alumni could play a strong role in the growth and development of GNIMS. This could be in the form of Mentors, Counselors, Examiners, Teachers, etc.

Industrial Visit

Industrial visits are significant activities in any educational programme for they contribute to the achievement of various essential learning outcomes. Industrial visit is a vital part of the post graduate management course curriculum. It helps to bridge the gap between classroom and the real working world. The visit also provides first-hand knowledge about the organizational structures and modes of operation in different industries. Industrial visits make students understand the subject to its core. It also gives them an idea about their job profile. Students are given projects based on learning from the visits.

Guru Nanak Institute of Management Studies organized an industrial visit to Silvassa from 17th July to 19th July 2012 for the MMS and PGDM students of Sem – III. The students visited Bombay Rayon Fashions Limited, Parle-G, Voltas Limited and Sterling Generators.


Workshop on Research Methodology for GNIMS Faculty Members

A two-day workshop on the topic of Research Methodology on 14th and 15th April 2012 was organized for the faculty members of GNIMS. A very senior and an eminent R.M. faculty Dr. S.N. Kulkarni facilitated the workshop.

The workshop covered topics such as qualitative and quantitative approaches to research, goals and significance of research, the speaker also threw light on the difference between Research Method and Methodology, the Research Process, Hypothesis framing, a good literature review were also discussed.

The workshop got good feedback and was highly appreciated by the faculty participants.


Corporate Cricket Match

S.G.P.C's Guru Nanak Institute of Management Studies (GNIMS) organized an inaugural Corporate 20:20 Cricket Match between B.A.R.C. and GNIMS students on 31st March 2012. The match was held on the B.A.R.C. cricket ground, Chembur.

The match was won by the B.A.R.C. cricket team. Best bowler and Best batsman award went to the players of B.A.R.C. team, whereas for his brilliant all round performance Dhawal Pawaskar (MMS Sem-II) won the Man of the Match award, he was also captaining the GNIMS Team.

Prof. Dr. Vidya Hattangadi along with many faculty members were present to cheer team GNIMS. The spirit with which the match was played was well appreciated by both the sides.

The revolving GNIMS trophy went to B.A.R.C team and both the teams would be again playing for the same in the later part of the year 2012.


Seminar on Highlights of Union Budget

SGPC's Guru Nanak Institute of Management Studies (GNIMS) organized a seminar on the topic of Highlights of Union Budget on 24th March 2012. The Speaker for the session was Mr. Kamlesh Kotak - Head of Research - Asian Market Security.

The lecture started with the Global and Indian economy preview, and what future holds for the Indian economy. The union budget as per the speaker was 'commercialized'. The next part had the entire budget at a glance, where in the meaning and applicability of various concepts like revenue, fiscal and primary deficit was explained and discussed.

The next part of the seminar included the takeaways from the budget. This was followed by the budget proposals good and bad points and what is missing in the budget. Later on the speaker discussed the impact of the budget on various industries. What's in the budget for the common man was also discussed in depth. This was followed by key statistics related top the budget and a question and answer session with the students.


Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Walk Held - DNA Correspondent

Students, faculty members and staff of Guru Nanak Institute of Management Studies (GNIMS) in Matunga jointly organised a walk with the Multiple Sclerosis Society of India (MSSI) on Sunday to create awareness about Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

The students have taken up MS awareness as one of their social missions in the present academic year. MS is a disease of the central nervous system which affects its functioning, unexpectedly resulting in devastating disabilities in young people in the prime of their lives. It has various symptoms from minor visual disturbances to total paralysis.

The walk commenced at 7.30am and continued till 11am, covering the Dadar and Matunga areas. The students had recently also volunteered for an MS camp organised at Shushrusha Hospital in Dadar.

Dr Ajit Singh, secretary, local management committee of Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) to which GNIMS belongs, encouraged the students and faculty to take u p social responsibilities as one of their main tasks. Dr Vidya Hattangadi, director, GNIMS, said that organisations do not exist in vacuum; they need to recognise social factors and help them to grow.

Anita Vesuvala, honourary secretary, and Sheela Chitnis, vice-president of MSSI, said that they need more youngsters to join them in creating MS awareness in society.

Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Walk Held - DNA Correspondent

SGPC's Guru Nanak Institute of Management Studies (GNIMS) organized a seminar in association with Higher Education Forum (HEF) on the topic of how the Mumbai Dabbawalla's have mastered the art of supply chain management on 11th February 2012.

The seminar opened with the address of Dr. A. K. Sengupta “ the founder member of Higher Education Forum. Dr. Sengupta in his address to the students and faculties emphasized on practical approaches in the class rooms while implementing the curriculum. He also said that the syllabus needs regular upgradation.

Dr. Pawan Agrawal a PhD on the topic of "A study of Logistics and Supply chain Management on Dabbawalla's in Mumbai" mesmerized the audience with his zealous and witty presentation on the subject. Dr. Agrawal has given presentations in Paris, Netherlands, USA etc.

The Forbes Global has made the Mumbai Dabbawalla's global figures. The Dabbawallas seem to have made a mark for themselves in the Management curriculum in some of the global B Schools in the Supply Chain Management. One of the astonishing facts of the Dabbawalla's is their accuracy in supplying dabba's all over Mumbai within the recorded time. The dabbawallas do their jobs with passion, honest and punctuality with a high level commitment and selflessness.

Dr. Agrawal enthused the students by touching upon the qualities and values exhibited by the dabbawalla's, which the future managers should emulate.

A Workshop on Overcoming Fears and Stress Management and R.E.B.T.

A workshop on "Self-Development", for the First Year MMS and PGDM students was organized on 27th January, 2012. The workshop was divided into two sessions, 'Overcoming Fears and Stress Management' and "R.E.B.T."

The first session i.e. "Overcoming Fears and Stress Management", was facilitated by Dr. Ali Akbar Gabhrani. The speaker, a clinical psychologist and an eminent personality in the field of stress management and counseling, he touched upon the definition and causes of stress and fears. He also stressed upon how to overcome fears and manage stress in the daily life of a student. The session was highly interactive and enjoyable and extremely helpful for the students.

The second session on "R.E.B.T." was facilitated by Ms. Ambereen Pradhan. The speaker is a trained REBT professional. The session covered practical applications of REBT. The session was made interactive with the speaker and her team indulging the students into various activities and role plays.

REBT stresses on our thinking, judging, deciding, analyzing, and doing. An effort was made by the speaker to teach that our emotions stem mainly from our beliefs, evaluations, interpretations, and reactions to life situations.

The session focused on reinstating the fact that we are born with a potential for both rational and irrational thinking. We are self-talking, self-evaluating, and self-sustaining. We have an inborn tendency toward growth and actualization. We learn and invent disturbing beliefs and keep ourselves disturbed through our self-talk. We have the capacity to change our cognitive, emotive, and behavioral processes.


Workshop organized on NSE's Certification in Financial Markets (NCFM)

A workshop on, "NSE's Certification in Financial Markets (NCFM)" for the First Year MMS and PGDM students was organized on 21st January, 2012. It was a day long workshop, wherein the first half of the day was dedicated to the general basic concepts in financial market and the second half stressed more upon the NCFM modules.

The speaker for the day was Mr. Aditya Jadhav, he works for National Stock Exchange of India Ltd. as Assistant Manager (Research & Education), and also he is responsible for managing the NSE's research & publications. The workshop was a highly interactive wherein a lot of industry trends and concepts were discussed with the students. The students were exposed and introduced to various modules of NCFM, also the contents and scope was discussed. The speaker also resolved in depth the student's queries with respect to different aspects and functions of a finance manager in various areas of finance. The session was followed by a questions and answer interaction between the students and the speaker.

  • Induction programme for the First Year Semester-I students was held over a period of 5 working days on the following dates:
    • MMS Semester-I 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th Aug, 2011
    • P.G. Semester-I 16th,17th, 18th, 20th & 23rd Aug, 2011 respectively
  • Both the induction programmes started of with the welcoming the new students, followed by the addressal of I/C Director Dr. Gowri Joshi and the respective HOD's
  • The same day consisted of a facility tour and an ice-breaking session for the students with the help of some management games
  • The induction schedule for the remaining 4 days comprised of sessions like Presentation Skills, Specialization Orientation, Research Orientation, Computer Skills, Case Study Analysis, Basic Statistics Orientation for Commerce Students, Basic Accounts Orientation for Non-Finance students and Creativity Workshop.

Induction Programme for Part-Time Programme Students for the academic year 2011-13 was held on 27th Aug, 2011 welcoming the new students, followed by the addressal of I/C Director Dr. Gowri Joshi and the respective HOD's.


Convocation Program 2011

S.G.P.C.'s Guru Nanak Institute of Management Studies (GNIMS) Post-Graduate Diploma Management (PGDM) Convocation for the academic year 2009-2011 (Full-Time) and 2008-2011 (Part-Time) was held on 17th September, 2011.

The dignitaries for the event, included The Key Note Speaker, Mr. Prakash Shanware “ CEO ∓ President (People First “ A Management Consulting Firm), and The Chief Guest, Mr. K.B. Balmurali, President- HR (Samsara Group).

The event commenced with blessings of Dr. Ajit Singh, D.G. & Addl. Sec. L.M.C. I/C Director Dr. Gowri Joshi welcomed the gathering and delivered a brief addressal about the challenges ahead for the 54 students gathered for the ceremony.

The Key Note Speaker briefed how India as an economy has earned respect globally. The Chief Guest provided an insight about Indian mythology and management.

The Key Note Speaker recited the Management Convocation Oath, post which, the certificates were awarded by him and the Chief Guest to the students.
